Abstract: The linkage unit in ribitol teichoic acid of Streptomyces chrysomallus sp. 2 was purified and found to contain a tetrasaccharide, composed of GlcNAc, GalNAc, FucNAc and QuiNAc residues. The enzymic synthesis of polyprenyl pyrophosphate tetrasaccharide was performed using biosynthetic and synthetic uridine diphosphate aminohexoses. N-acetylglucosamine residue was identified at the reducing end of the tetrasaccharide. The synthetic derivatives QuiNAc – PPMpr and FucNAc – PPMpr could not serve as intermediates in the enzymic synthesis of the tetrasaccharide fragment.
