Abstract: Two gangliosides were isolated from the holothuria Cucumaria japonlca by DEAE-and TEAE-cellulose column chromatography and preparative TLC on silica gel. On the basis of total and partial acid hydrolysis, methanolysis, methylation analysis, enzymatic cleavage with neuraminidase, chromium trioxide oxidation and NaIO4–KMnO4 oxidation the major and minor gangliosides were identified as N-glycolylneuraminosyl-(α2–6)-glucopyranosyl-(β1–1)-ceramide and disialosyl(α)-glucosyl-(βl–1)-ceramide, respectively. The composition of the lipid moiety of the main ganglioside was determined.
