Abstract: Three unusual gangliosides – two major and one minor – were isolated from the total lipid extract of the starfish Acanthaster planci. On the basis of chemical and spectral data the major gangliosides were identified as (3-galactofuranosyl-(l →4)-α-N-acetylneuraminosyl-(23)-β-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-glucopyrauosyl-(1→1)-ceramide containing C16r-phytosphingosine as the long-chain base. The more polar of the major gangliosides contains α-hydroxy fatty acids, whereas the other one includes normal fatty acids. The minor ganglioside was shown to consist of the same oligosaccharide chain as the major gangliosides, phytosphingosine, unsubstituted fatty acids and amino acids.
