Abstract: A reductive system NaBH4–BaCl2 or SrCl2 is proposed to split the carbohydrate chains of N-glycoproteins. The method allows one to obtain intact oligosaccharides (in 50–60% yields) including alkali-labile fucosylated oligosaccharides from plant N-glycoproteins (lectin from Sambucus nigra bark).
